Sausage balls are a popular snack or appetizer made from a mixture of ground sausage, baking mix (like Bisquick), and cheese. We set out to make some gluten free sausage balls and were blown away by how good they turned out!
Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Just 4 ingredients!
- Crisp edges and soft centers
- Easy appetizer or side dish for parties, potlucks, or holidays
- Make-ahead breakfast option
- Doesn't taste "gluten-free"
Important Ingredient Notes
- You can find Gluten Free Bisquick in the baking aisle of most grocery stores. Making your own is also super easy and we preferred the texture using our homemade gluten-free Bisquick Mix.
- We recommend Sharp or Medium cheddar cheese, freshly grated.
Pro Tips
- Don't overcook! Meat gets tough when it's cooked too long so keep an eye on these. Cook them to 160 degrees F then immediately remove them from the oven.
- Hint: We do not recommend using a mixer, which could create a tough texture from over-mixing. Use food-grade gloves to reduce the mess.
Change it Up!
- Spicy - use a spicy sausage and pepper jack cheese!
- Lower Fat - swap turkey sausage and use a low-fat cheese. You might need to add a bit extra milk for enough moisture to bind the sausage balls together.
- Sweet + Savory - Use maple sausage and swap 2 tablespoons of the milk for real maple syrup.
- Italian - use Italian sausage. Swap the cheddar cheese for 4 ounces mozzarella + 4 ounces freshly grated parmesan cheese. Serve with marinara sauce or a seasoned olive oil.

Gluten Free Sausage Balls Recipe (Dairy Free Option)
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground pork sausage (check labels to be sure it's gluten free)
- 1 ¾ cup 9.3 ounces gluten-free Bisquick
- ½ cup milk (we used whole milk)
- 8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese (finely grated)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
- Add all ingredients into a large bowl and mix with your hands just until it is all combined. Using food-grade gloves can make this process easier and less messy. The texture should be similar to meatballs and you can add a bit extra milk if needed to help everything come together.
- Form into 24 balls about 1 inch in diameter and place 1-2 inches apart on prepared cookie sheet.
- Bake in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, until internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F.
Notes
Make Ahead
-
- Make the gluten-free sausage balls through step 2, placing them on a parchment-lined baking sheet that will fit on a shelf in your freezer.
-
- Freeze until solid.
-
- Transfer to freezer-safe Ziplock bag and be sure to press all the air off and seal tightly.
Storage
Store leftover sausage balls in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days, or freeze for longer.Make it Dairy Free
Use dairy-free cheese and dairy-free milk. We suggest using a milk with a higher fat content such as Oatly full-fat oat milk or a homemade cashew milk. Also be aware that the milk you use could affect the taste of the sausage balls, so we don't recommend using something like coconut milk which has a stronger, flavor, or a sweetened dairy-free milk.Nutrition
FAQ
Jones brand sausages are all certified gluten-free. Other brands vary and it is always best to check the label on packaging to determine if it's safe for you. Some information online suggests that Jimmy Dean sausages (as shown in the ingredients shot) are not gluten-free, but the package I picked up at the grocery store is labeled gluten-free so we felt good about it. Always do what's best for you and your health!
Use the "keep warm" setting on your crockpot to keep sausage balls warm for parties or potlucks. Do not use a higher temperature as that will cause them to dry out.
