Have you heard of rolled ice cream? We took a TTT field trip to Sweet Rolled Tacos in Salt Lake City, Utah to try it for ourselves.
Rolled ice cream is a unique ice cream concept believed to have originated in Thailand and it's almost as fun to watch it being made as it is to eat it!
Sweet Rolled Tacos took this viral trend to the next level by crafting large ice cream rolls as you watch, then stuffing them into a sweet taco shell before topping them with delightful things like whipped cream and Pocky Sticks.

First Impressions
Sweet Rolled Tacos is located in the Gateway mall in downtown SLC, in a cute strip surrounded by green space, hanging colored flags, and a small outdoor play/seating area.
Both times we've went, we have found a paid parking spot on the street close-by, which I always appreciate!
The inside features a light and fun vibe with pops of color throughout and a full-size mural on one wall.
The space includes a large area for ordering with a separate menu across from the register for those still deciding, making it easier for them to keep up with crowds, plus a good amount of seating.
The space is shared by Pop Drinks, so you can grab something refreshing while you're there if you want, too!
We love the plexiglass at the counters so you can watch the staff create your rolled ice cream taco because it is absolutely a work of art and *almost* as much fun as eating them!
The Menu and What We Ordered
You can order from Sweet Rolled Tacos and Pop Drinks at the register, making it easy to do both if you would like.
There are lots of options, but not so many that it feels overwhelming. The menu is organized well and there are lots of pictures which makes it easier to decide.
Sweet Rolled Tacos' signature dessert is, of course, fresh rolled ice cream (made while you wait) in a waffle cone taco shell, topped beautifully with things like whipped cream, candy, and Pocky Sticks.
You can also shakes, slushes, lemonades, or teas (more on that below)
Keep in mind that they do change flavors, offering seasonal and special event varieties throughout the year.
Here's what we've tried so far:
- Strawberry Cheesecake rolled taco rolled strawberry ice cream finished with a swirl of whipped cream, crunchy strawberry Pocky sticks, bite-sized cream cheese pieces, and a drizzle of strawberry sauce.
- Ube rolled taco Purple yam ice cream topped with a swirl of whipped cream, a sprinkle of coconut flakes, and a drizzle of ube sauce.
- Cookies and Cream rolled taco Cookies and cream ice cream roll topped with whipped cream, Oreo dust, cookies and cream Pocky sticks, and a rich chocolate drizzle.
- Rainbow Road rolled taco My youngest was excited about this one! Fruity Pebbles ice cream topped with cotton candy-flavored whipped cream, colorful sprinkles, crunchy Fruity Pebbles cereal, and a rainbow sour belt.
- Pina Colada rolled taco coconut rolled ice cream with pineapple sauce, topped with whipped cream, more pineapple sauce, and coconut flakes
- S'mores Galore rolled taco Graham cracker ice cream topped with a swirl of whipped cream, crushed graham crackers, a toasted marshmallow, and a rich drizzle of chocolate.
- Taro Ice Cream Smoothie (like a milkshake) Taro milkshake topped with whipped cream (taro is a tropical root vegetable that tastes similar to sweet potato but with a more subtle flavor)
- Desert Delight flavored water from Pop Drinks
Taste Test: Our Honest Thoughts
Rolled tacos are beautiful and fun, but do they taste as good as all the hype?
We think they do! There were definitely flavors we enjoyed more than others, with the strawberry cheesecake and ube rolled ice cream tacos at the top of our list, but we haven't yet met a rolled ice cream taco we didn't like 😉
The blend of flavors in the strawberry cheesecake were on point, with tangy cheesecake bites, fresh strawberry bits and a strawberry drizzle in the shape of the heart just because...all wrapped up in a crisp cookie shell that really tastes delightful.
The ube is just a beautiful purple hue we couldn't say no to, and the texture seemed a bit creamier than the other ones we tried (although they were plenty creamy too). We loved the whipped cream, ube drizzle, and toasted coconut on top. Yum.
Also, don't discount the shakes! The taro shake is a unique experience and we really can't describe the flavor, but all three of us (plus most of Celeste's kids) loved it a lot.
If this is your first visit to Sweet Rolled Tacos or your 7th, we recommend giving this one a try!
The S'mores Galore with its toasted marshmallow graham cracker dust is so fun to look at and to eat!
After a super sweet rolled taco, we didn't have much room for sugary sodas and so we grabbed the Desert Delight from Pop Drinks and we're glad we did!
The flavor combo was on point and it had just a hint of sweetness to make it delightfully refreshing without weighing you down. We would order this one again!
We have our eye on the Monster Ink rolled taco with its chocolate chip cookie and Oreo base, as well as the Chamango Slush!
Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Options
Some menu items such as the taro milkshake do not have gluten-containing ingredients, but there's also a definite risk of cross contamination.
Celeste's husband with minor food allergies felt comfortable getting a shake, but we wouldn't recommend it for someone with celiac disease or serious food allergies.
Some menu items can be made with a dairy free ice cream base, but note that the taco shells and many toppings contain dairy.
